From the moment their team arrived at my home, they worked in a way that was far from professional and quite careless. They chatted among themselves all day, were on the phone constantly, and I even heard singing at one point. It was obvious they didn't really know what they were doing — the job dragged on far longer than it should have, and I suspect part of those phone calls were them asking for help with problems they were running into. They clearly weren't competent at their job.
One of those phone calls was about a problem they'd had with another customer before. Normally you wouldn't expect them to have a conversation like that in front of a customer, since it's not good for a customer to overhear it. But they were so relaxed and careless that they put the call on speakerphone. The person on the other end said things like "The problem you caused is now my problem. You need to fix this." Their employee replied with something like "I went to the police station." I don't even want to imagine what kind of problem that might have been.
On top of all this, their team also damaged a wall in my home during the job.
Between their attitude and overhearing that conversation, it wasn't hard to guess things were going to go badly. And indeed, after their team left, two of the three AC units in my home developed problems. In this home I've lived in since New Year's, my AC units had been working perfectly until their team touched them, and then they broke. The living room unit stopped working entirely — it was blowing warm air instead of cold. The unit in the bedroom couldn't bring the room temperature below a certain point. Our home was heating up quickly.
I then contacted their head office first, and afterward two separate managers. In a situation like this — with one AC unit completely broken and another partially broken, sitting in a home that was rapidly heating up — you'd expect the managers to call immediately, to be at least as shocked and upset as we were, to understand the situation and try to resolve it. Instead, one of their managers didn't respond to my repeated calls and messages at all. The other responded extremely indifferently, as if I'd said "our lightbulb isn't working." At least they said, "I'll send a team tomorrow morning." I said, "Please don't send the same team."
The next day a new team came. When they measured the air coming from the living room AC unit, the result was 27 degrees (when it should have been 16–17 degrees). They inspected the unit at length and said, "There's nothing wrong here, the problem is with your building's ventilation system." Blaming someone else is of course the easiest way out. When I said that wasn't possible, they called the building's technician.
The technician who came saw in half a second what they hadn't been able to see in half an hour, showed exactly where the problem in the AC unit was, and also proved there was nothing wrong with the building's ventilation. When I then told their team, "See, the problem wasn't the ventilation like you said — it was the AC unit. The team that came yesterday broke it," they said, "We don't know anything about that, we're the cleaning team." At that point I was laughing out of sheer frustration.
After their team left, I waited for their managers to call, to ask whether the problem had been resolved, to try to find out if there was anything they could do — but of course, in vain.
For the following 5 days I arranged a reliable repair team and worked on fixing the problem they caused, and I was finally able to resolve it to some extent. At least I'm no longer sitting in a hot house in Dubai in August but there are still things I need to have done.
